Aspire Berkley Maynard Academy opened in 2005 in Oakland. The school offers personalized lesson plans for students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The school works with students to ensure they are receiving a quality education that will help carry them off to college. Aspire Berkley Maynard Academy is part of the Aspire Public Schools which is rated among the top performing schools in the US. The school provides low-income families with a quality education option.

Every student attending any of the schools in the Aspire network are given the skills they need to be able to meet all the requirements to enter a college or university upon graduation of high school. One of the programs that is getting quite a bit of attention is the College for Certain education which is working with 12,000 students, with the student body being 85% Black and Latino with 80% of student coming from low-income families with most not having a family member enter college before.

The Aspire Berkley Maynard Academy uses a variety of teaching methods, which include distributed practice, massed practice, inquire, project based instruction, explicit instruction, apprenticeship, and problem solving. Along with core subjects, the school offers drawing, chorus, physical education classes, and yearbook. Aspire Berkley Maynard Academy also offers after programs including entrepreneur’s club, golf, debate, martial arts, basketball, science club with CAL engineering students.

There are a few parents that have complaints with the teachers and even the administration; however, the majority of the parents are very happy with the success of the school and the students. Students are performing above average in most classes and really enjoy going to school. The lunches are not that great and there could be more sports and other extra curricular activities, however, the school is doing a good job of providing students with a quality education.

With the California Standards Tests most grade levels scored a higher than average percentages in all courses with only a few being below average. The Academic Performance Index showed that Aspire Berkley Maynard Academy has improved academically over the previous year.

Overall, Aspire Berkley Maynard Academy is providing a good education for students as well as providing a safe learning environment. You should take a tour of the school and talk with other parents before enrolling your child to ensure you are making the proper decision for your child.
