The Arts Academy at South Mountain opened its doors in 1999 with an average enrollment of 300 students per year in grades kindergarten through 8th. The school is known for its family type atmosphere that works with students and parents to provide a safe and nurturing environment.

Along with excellent core subjects that go beyond the regular curriculum at public schools, the Arts Academy at South Mountain charter school offers extra curricular activities, which include band, painting, and theater and sports like basketball and physical education classes. Special programs offered include academic contests, yearbook, and science & technology.

The major reason parents love this school is the close-knit environment. Students and teachers know one another by name and parents are actively involved. Parents are happy with the progression and achievements of their children, which are reading and doing math problems even in kindergarten. Students at Arts Academy at South Mountain participated in the AIMS testing program, which is a state requirement to measure students mastering of core subjects set forth by the state.

In reading, 54% of 3rd graders passed or exceeded the exam with the state average of students in Arizona that participated in the exam was at 76% and in math 31% while the state average was 68%. In reading, 80% of 4th graders passed with the state average at 75%, in science 60% with the state average at 60% and in math 40% passed with the state average at 65%. In reading, 61% of 5th graders passed with the state average at 79%, in writing 22% with the state average at 55%, and in math 17% with the state at 63%. In reading, 50% of 6th graders passed with the state average at 81%, in writing 35% with state average at 56%, and in math 30% with the state average at 59%. In reading, 71% of 7th graders passed with the state average at 82%, in writing 14% with the state at 53%, and in math 43% with the state at 61%. In reading, 55% of 8th graders passed with the state average at 71%, in science 45% with the state at 63%, and in math 55% with the state average at 54%.
