Ararat Charter School Review

Ararat Charter School opened in 2010 and serves students in the community of Van Nuys. The school teaches students in kindergarten through 5th grades in both English and Spanish making this a dual immersion school. The school is providing a service that a traditional school setting is unable to fill within the community. On average, the school has just over 300 students enrolled per year.

The campus divided with kindergarten and first grade on one campus that is a private facility. The facility offers six classrooms with a media center, health office, yard, and a cafetorium. The 2nd campus is on the Erwin Street Elementary School campus for students in 2nd through 5th grades.

All subjects are taught in English, Armenian, and Spanish for all students. The curriculum is challenging that blends the arts into the classroom with cultural awareness and understanding at the core. The school is nurturing and caring with devoted teachers and staff that work to ensure that all students excel. The school day is longer than traditional schools, which provides students with the opportunity to delve into other subjects including drama, dance, music, and art.

Parents are very excited that students will learn Armenian and Spanish at the same time as they learn core subjects. Parents expressed that the teachers are very caring and nurturing. The only complaint is that the campus is divided and only goes through 5th grade. Most parents would like to see the school progress to include all the way to graduation. One more complaint is that there are not enough extra curricular activities offered. However, students enjoy going to school and the curriculum is very good. Most parents also like the fact that students must wear uniforms.

The Academic Performance Index showed that Ararat Charter School had noted improvement in their academics from the previous year and with the California Standards Tests, the results were above average in most grades and throughout the core subjects.

The school is providing a unique multi-cultural learning environment where students are learning and becoming life long learners. Of course, to make sure the school is a good fit for your family it is a good to tour the school and talk with teachers.
