Antioch Charter Academy opened in 1996 and serves students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The school offers the Montessori Method, which works with a child’s own natural abilities through independent discovery, peer teaching, and multi age grouping. Students are placed in groups not by age but by where they are in learning which helps students not feel as if they are not performing where they should. This type of learning environment allows students to become life long learners and responsible. Teachers and staff provide a supportive and caring learning environment where students feel at home. Along with this method of teaching, the school also utilizes multiple intelligences, which allows students to work in their own style. The categories of intelligence recognized include self-smart (intra-personal), people smart (inter-personal), naturalist, bodily, visual, linguistic, and logical.

Along with core subjects students can also participate in extra curricular activities including drawing, drama, photography, chorus, band, film production, orchestra, ceramics, physical education classes, volleyball, martial arts, basketball, soccer, yearbook, and science & technology.

At first, students and parents both have to adjust to the new learning environment and the way in which students are taught as it is completely unlike traditional schools. Parents have expressed just how much they are happy with the Montessori Method and the caring teachers that are at this school. Students are doing better and enjoying going to school. Most parents stated the school is a great learning environment that allows their children to learn and express their own thoughts. The school is also safe and secure which is another worry that is gone with Antioch Charter Academy.

The Academic Performance Index shows that the school went down in growth instead of showing any improvement. However, the California Standards Tests had lower grades coming in below state averages but the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders all scored above state average in all core subjects.
