Antelope View Charter School Review

Antelope View Charter School opened in 2000 for students in 9th through 12th grades and provides an alternative to traditional school settings with both on and off site opportunities.

The school is unique in that it does not provide the same school setting as traditional school but one that provides an independent learning environment. Students in the upper grades have the opportunity to also receive credits from junior college while working to obtain their high school diploma, so they can earn double credits and even graduate early.

The administration stresses that before enrolling your child in the school, be sure that your child will work independently while completing all assignments and turn them in on time. The school is very strict on attendance as well. The majority of the schoolwork is done at home so parents are also required to supervise their children and be involved in the learning process.

The responsibilities of each student include completing all assignments, attending all instructional meetings, participate in the learning process, maintain a 2.0 GPA and all students must sign the Anti-bullying pledge. Parents are responsible for ensuring their children complete all assignments, supervise students to ensure they are producing quality schoolwork, stay in contact with the consulting teacher, as well as review and sign all documents.

Along with core subjects, Antelope View Charter School provides a few extra curricular activities, which include band, computer arts, ceramics, drawing, basketball, and student government.

Parents are very pleased with the majority of teachers at the school and truly enjoy being involved in their children’s learning. However, the last couple of years, parents stated noticing a turn over of teachers due to a reduction in the salaries of teachers. Communication between administration and parents is not as good as some parents would like. Other parents expressed that their children are doing much better after being enrolled in Antelope View Charter School and that they enjoy attending school. Most students are happy with only attending school 4 hours per day, 4 days per week.

The Academic Performance Index showed that Antelope View Charter School had a 42% growth in academics over the previous year. The California Standards Tests showed a large array of mixture with some grades and courses being below average, some average, and some above average. The California High School Exit Exam had courses above state averages
