Animo South Los Angeles Charter High School opened in 2004 as a public charter school as an alternative to traditional school settings. The school provides a college preparatory curriculum. The school serves students in 9th through 12th grades that reside in downtown Los Angeles or the nearby communities. The school serves families that are diverse culturally, racially, and socio-economically providing a well rounded multi-cultural small school environment. The school is part of the Green Dot School system that expects high standards from its teachers, staff, and students while encouraging parent involvement.
Along with core subjects the school offers a variety of extra curricular activities including sports, student clubs, and after school programs. The activities include band, dance, drama, photography, basketball, football, physical education classes, newspaper, student council, and yearbook. Other after school programs include gaming, tutoring, credit recovery, Latin dance, boxing, fashion design, anime, drivers education, guitar, cheerleading, skating, and weight lifting.
Parents and students are excited about the college credits students can achieve while working toward their high school diploma. A few parents expressed their concern over the teacher turn over rate and the fact that the school does not have a dining facility and students must eat in tents. On the other hand, all parents stated the school is a great alternative when compared to traditional schools in the area. Students are learning and doing quite well over the way they were learning at other schools. The small class does seem to be a huge benefit where students can receive more one on one help when needed.
The results of the Academic Performance Index showed that Animo South Los Angeles Charter High School had no growth at all over the year before. The results of the California Standards Tests placed students at Animo South Los Angeles Charter High School below state average in all grade levels and across all core subjects.
The school seems to have gone down a bit over where it was a few years ago as tests scores were higher. This may be the result of new teachers, however, it does not mean that students are not learning or receiving a quality education. To ensure the school is right for yoru child, you should talk with administration regarding the low test scores and learn more about the curriculum.
