American Heritage Academy – Cottonwood Campus Review

The American Heritage Academy opened the Cottonwood Campus in 1995 and has an enrollment of 300 students on average for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. This provides students with the chance to begin school and graduate with the same classmates as well as the same principles and type of curriculum throughout the entire educational years.

The school is founded on traditional principles instilling the same goals, patriotism, and greatest of our founding fathers. The staff and teachers work together to ensure students learn traditional values and can become great leaders of their community and society as a whole. The core curriculum includes government, history, community service, leadership, mathematics, science, and English. The school offers extra curricular activities, which include sports, drama, yearbook, art, band, choir, home economics, government simulations, hunter safety, and photography. The entire curriculum is based on liberal arts including phonics, student involved science, Saxon math, and patriotism.

Parents and students alike like the curriculum and the staff at the school. Each class is small and allows for more one on one teaching opportunities. The one issue raised by parents and students were discipline and safety at the school. The lack of discipline is the major worry for parents. The school does not involve parents as much as some would like with issues regarding student’s progression as well as discipline matters.

In the state of Arizona all students in public schools are required to take the Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards. The grades that must take the test include 3rd through 8th and 10th graders. High school students cannot graduate if they do not pass the 10th grade test.

Students at the American Heritage Academy at the Cottonwood Campus took the required testing and showed they were knowledgeable in the required courses.

The percentages of third grade students that passed the test in recent years in reading were 58%, 67%, and 71%. In writing, students passed writing with percentages being 41%, and 84%. In math, the percentages included 31%, 71, and 35%.
