As you look out your window, you can probably see many ways humans have affected the local ecosystems. Anything harmful released into the environment is pollution. Many people think of pollution simply as trash left by the side of the road. But there are many other types of pollution as well.
People also damage ecosystems by destroying the habitats of many organisms. And we aren't aware of how shifting the delicate balance of a local ecosystem will affect the global ecosystem.
To help protect the Earth, scientists developed a branch of biology that studies the phenomena that affect the maintenance, loss, and restoration of biological species.
In this Lesson, we'll look at how humans are causing environmental degradation. Then we'll investigate how these and other changes lead to a loss of diversity of organisms on Earth.
Finally, we'll discuss what can be done to fix the problems we've already created, and what we need to do to keep our planet healthy.
