00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:02.500
Welcome back to Educator.com.
00:00:02.500 --> 00:00:13.600
This lesson is going to go over some concepts of fractions and how to simplify them.
00:00:13.600 --> 00:00:20.300
When we have a fraction, we are representing it as a part.
00:00:20.300 --> 00:00:26.300
If we have something that is whole, we are going to take parts of it, break it up into parts.
00:00:26.300 --> 00:00:30.500
That is how we write fractions.
00:00:30.500 --> 00:00:37.200
Let's pretend it is your birthday; this is your cake.
00:00:37.200 --> 00:00:40.600
We are obviously going to have to cut the cake.
00:00:40.600 --> 00:00:44.700
Since it is your birthday, you would probably want the biggest piece.
00:00:44.700 --> 00:00:54.900
If we take this cake, let's say we are going to cut it up into 4 equal pieces.
00:00:54.900 --> 00:01:07.600
If you get 1 piece of this cake, you are getting 1 piece out of how many total pieces?
00:01:07.600 --> 00:01:16.500
1, 2, 3, 4; you will be getting 1/4 of your cake.
00:01:16.500 --> 00:01:30.900
Let's say I cut the cake up into smaller pieces.
00:01:30.900 --> 00:01:39.600
Here if you take 1 piece of your cake,
00:01:39.600 --> 00:01:47.400
then you are going to take 1 out of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
00:01:47.400 --> 00:01:53.800
Out of 8 total slices, you are getting 1.
00:01:53.800 --> 00:02:02.200
Let's say you want more cake; you ate 3.
00:02:02.200 --> 00:02:10.700
I can write this as 3 out of 8.
00:02:10.700 --> 00:02:16.700
Look at this one right here; pretend that this is a chocolate bar.
00:02:16.700 --> 00:02:19.600
Your chocolate bar, you are going to break it up into pieces.
00:02:19.600 --> 00:02:24.800
We can break up the chocolate bar into 8 pieces.
00:02:24.800 --> 00:02:39.500
If you eat 1 little piece, you are eating 1 out of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 pieces.
00:02:39.500 --> 00:02:49.600
Let's say you eat another one; that is 2 out of 8 pieces.
00:02:49.600 --> 00:03:01.700
I can also write this in a different way.
00:03:01.700 --> 00:03:08.200
If the chocolate bar is broken up into 4 pieces, you break it up into 4 pieces,
00:03:08.200 --> 00:03:19.700
then this right here that you ate is going to be the same thing as 1 out of 4 pieces.
00:03:19.700 --> 00:03:26.900
If you look at this, 1, 2 out of 8 that you ate here
00:03:26.900 --> 00:03:40.200
is going to be the same as 1 out of 4.
00:03:40.200 --> 00:03:46.600
That is when we are going to learn how to simply these fractions.
00:03:46.600 --> 00:03:50.200
Here we have 8 pieces.
00:03:50.200 --> 00:04:03.700
4 out of 8 would be 1, 2, 3, and 4.
00:04:03.700 --> 00:04:11.400
This is 4 out of 8.
00:04:11.400 --> 00:04:24.900
Instead of having 8 pieces, I am only going to have 4.
00:04:24.900 --> 00:04:34.400
In this case, having 4 out of 8 would be the same thing as 2 out of 4
00:04:34.400 --> 00:04:44.600
because I have 4 pieces and I ate 2 out of those 4.
00:04:44.600 --> 00:04:51.400
If I wanted to show 4 out of 10, I need to have something... I can have a circle.
00:04:51.400 --> 00:04:59.900
Or I can have something rectangular like the chocolate bar.
00:04:59.900 --> 00:05:17.700
I need to 10 equal pieces; I can do this.
00:05:17.700 --> 00:05:20.800
Let's say these were 10 equal pieces.
00:05:20.800 --> 00:05:36.900
To show 4 out of 10... that would be 4 out of 10.
00:05:36.900 --> 00:05:40.800
How can you represent this in a different way?
00:05:40.800 --> 00:05:46.200
Instead of breaking this up into 10 pieces, let's say you broke it up into 5 pieces.
00:05:46.200 --> 00:05:50.800
In that case, if it was 5 pieces, this would be 1.
00:05:50.800 --> 00:05:56.900
This would be 2, 3, 4, and 5.
00:05:56.900 --> 00:06:14.400
4 out of 10 could be the same as 2 out of 5.
00:06:14.400 --> 00:06:20.900
This one, we have 6 pieces; 6 pieces.
00:06:20.900 --> 00:06:29.100
If I do this, this would be 1 out of 6.
00:06:29.100 --> 00:06:37.300
If I take this piece, then that would be 2 out of 6.
00:06:37.300 --> 00:06:48.100
Maybe if I ate this piece, then that would be 3 out of 6.
00:06:48.100 --> 00:06:58.200
If you think about it, if I have 6 pieces and I ate 3 of them, I ate 1/2.
00:06:58.200 --> 00:07:05.000
I ate half of this chocolate bar.
00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:07.300
Let's say I don't have a picture; I don't have a chocolate bar.
00:07:07.300 --> 00:07:10.500
I just have a fraction, 5 over 25.
00:07:10.500 --> 00:07:16.800
How can I write this in simplest form?
00:07:16.800 --> 00:07:27.100
In this case, I can take a common factor, a number that multiplies into 5 and 25.
00:07:27.100 --> 00:07:31.700
I can divide both numbers by that number.
00:07:31.700 --> 00:07:38.300
5 and 25; I know that 5 goes into 5 and 5 goes into 25.
00:07:38.300 --> 00:07:49.600
That means I can divide this number by 5 and divide this number by 5.
00:07:49.600 --> 00:07:51.600
They have to be divided by the same number.
00:07:51.600 --> 00:07:55.600
Or else you are not going to get the right answer.
00:07:55.600 --> 00:08:04.200
5 divided by 5 is 1; 25 divided by 5 is 5.
00:08:04.200 --> 00:08:08.100
Let's look at this fraction again, 1 and 5.
00:08:08.100 --> 00:08:14.100
We have to make sure that they have no common factors besides 1.
00:08:14.100 --> 00:08:17.300
For 1 and 5, that is the only common factor they have.
00:08:17.300 --> 00:08:21.500
That means we are done; this is the answer.
00:08:21.500 --> 00:08:34.000
The simplest form of 5 over 25 would be 1 over 5.
00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:44.900
To find the simplest form of 14 over 49, we are going to look for a common factor.
00:08:44.900 --> 00:08:51.900
Meaning we are going to look for a number amongst 14 and 49
00:08:51.900 --> 00:08:58.800
that can be multiplied to get 14 and it can be multiplied to get 49.
00:08:58.800 --> 00:09:04.100
A common factor between these two numbers would be 7.
00:09:04.100 --> 00:09:08.000
In order to get the simplest form, I can take this fraction,
00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:16.700
divide the top number and the bottom number by that common factor.
00:09:16.700 --> 00:09:19.800
Again they have to be the same number.
00:09:19.800 --> 00:09:25.700
You have to divide both numbers by that same number.
00:09:25.700 --> 00:09:36.200
14 divided by 7 is 2; 49 divided by 7 is 7.
00:09:36.200 --> 00:09:39.500
I look at these two numbers now.
00:09:39.500 --> 00:09:43.900
I want to see if there is a common factor between 2 and 7.
00:09:43.900 --> 00:09:49.800
The only common factor is 1; that means I am done.
00:09:49.800 --> 00:09:59.300
The simplest form of 14 over 49 would be 2 over 7.
00:09:59.300 --> 00:10:03.000
That is it for this lesson; thank you for watching Educator.com.
