
Average scores for all sections of the test were the same as last year, with 502 in the critical-reading, 515 in math, and 494 in writing sections. Average composite scores were 1511.
There was an increase of 8% in test takers from last year, bringing the total to more than 1.5 million. Girls continue to narrow the score discrepancy in math with boys, but their average score is still 33 points lower with 500. However, girls outscore the boys in the writing test with an average of 13 points at 501.
Racial and socioeconomic gaps still remained with a 303 point difference in composite scores between blacks and whites. The gap between the richest and poorest students was 356 points. The largest gap is with parents who have the most and least education, with a disparity of 387 points.
Although many argue that short-term preparatory courses could not make up for years of a rigorous curriculum, the main issue is with access to quality SAT preparation. There is an overwhelming distribution in regards to class and race.
