Writing Expressions
- In order to translate a word phrase into an algebraic expression, you translate the words into numbers and operation symbols.

| Multiplication | product, multiplied by, times |
| Division | quotient, divided by |
Duy is twice as old as his sister. Write an expression using Duy's age, D, to describe his sister's age, S.
- Let D = Duy's age. Let S = his sister's age.
D = 2S
A kiwi costs 95 more cents than a lemon. Write an expression using the cost of the kiwi, K, to describe the cost of the lemon, L.
- Let K = cost of the kiwi. Let L = the cost of the lemon.
K = L + 95
David's age is three times 7 less than Michelle's age. Write an expression describing David's age, D, in relation to Michelle's, M.
- Let D = David's age . Let M = Michelle's age.
D = 3(M − 7)
Write an expression for the number of months in x years.
- In 1 year, there are 12 months.
- In x years, there are 12x months.

- In 1 day, there are 24 hours.
- In y days, there are 24y hours.

Write an expression for the number of seconds in z minutes.
- In 1 minute, there are 60 seconds.

Tiffany buys apples for her 9 siblings. They decide to split the number of apples equally. If A = number of apples Tiffany bought, how many apples do each of her siblings get?
- Let A = total number of apples.
- There are 9 siblings, so each sibling gets [A/9] apples.

Eric bought granola bars for his 4 coworkers and gives each coworker an equal amount of granola bars. If g = number of granola bars Eric got, how many granola bars did each coworker receive?
- Let g = number of granola bars.
- There are 4 coworkers, so each coworker gets [g/4] granola bars.

Write an expression for the number of dogs, d, plus 7 cats.
d + 7
Write an expression for the number of m men minus 11 women.
m − 11

I have a question? on my math paper it says a plumber charges $75 for the first 30 minutes of each house call plus $2 for each additional minute that she works. ( we have to translate word problems for math)

The practice question (5) about the hours and days's answer is wrong.
It's 24y isn't it?
