The humble beginnings of the University of Saint Mary may come as a surprise, considering what it has grown into today. It originated as a small academy for young men and women, founded by The Sisters of Charity in 1858. A year later, the first boarding school was opened for girls only in downtown Leavenworth. When it was filled to capacity with women from different parts of the United States thronging to the place, a new boarding school was built in 1870, at the University’s current location and it was called St. Mary’s Academy. This Academy was a huge success and in 1923, the name was changed to Saint Mary College, a junior college for women. Then it began admitting men and became a co-ed in the coming years. Today, it has four campuses where fully accredited university degrees are offered. The main campus is in Leavenworth and the other two are in Overland Park; Shawnee; and Kansas City in Kansas.

The university began its journey as a land-grant institution in 1856, as Maryland Agricultural College. It played a crucial role during the Civil War, providing lodging for soldiers of both sides. In 1858, it was launched as the forerunner of the University of Maryland. In 1920, the College Park and Baltimore campuses are linked with the consolidation of University of Maryland and in 1988, the five University campuses form a University of Maryland System, with College Park designated as the flagship university of this system. Although, full degree programs are not offered, students can take advantage of the numerous professional certifications that can help them fulfill their career goals. Four, ten-week sessions are offered to students through online instruction. Among the courses offered online, Professional Studies in Food Safety Risk Analysis and Public Health Informatics are a couple.
