Hi, I have completed the Physical Science course, and I would like to say that I enjoyed it very much.

Properties of Matter

  • Matter is anything that has mass or takes up space.
  • All matter is made up of one or more elements
  • Matter that is pure and made up of a fixed composition is a pure substance.
  • A pure substance has a fixed composition, can be an element or a compound which is made up of more than one element. Compounds have different properties of elements that are bonded to form compounds
  • A mixture is made up of more than one pure substances
  • A heterogeneous mixture is where each component of the mixture is unevenly mixed and visible. If the particles settle in a liquid, the mixture is a heterogeneous suspension.
  • A homogeneous mixture is where the components of the mixture are evenly mixed and not visible. If the particles are dissolved, the mixture is a solution. If the particles are suspended, the mixture is a colloid.
  • A physical property is a characteristic that can be observed without being changed, like appearance, magnetism, and ductility.
  • A physical change is a change in a physical property where no new substance is formed.
  • A chemical property is a characteristic that indicates the ability of the substance to change into a new substance such as flammability or reactivity to light.
  • A chemical change is a change in a chemical property where a new substance is formed.

In what situation would the displacement of an object in motion be zero?

When the object starts and stops its motion in the exact same place.

How is speed different from velocity?

Mathematically, they are the same, but velocity includes the DIRECTION of the object in motion.

What information does the slope of a distance-time graph give you?

The speed

What information does the slope of a speed-time graph give you?

The acceleration

What does a curved line on a distance-time graph indicate?

The rate of speed is changing

What does a steeper line on a distance-time graph indicate?

An object moving at a higher speed will have a steeper line.

When the acceleration of an object is calculated and the answer is a negative number, what does that tell you?

That the object has negative acceleration, which means it is slowing down.

What does a horizontal line (across from side to side) on a distance-time graph indicate?

That the object is not moving (covers no distance)

What does a horizontal line (across from side to side) on a speed-time graph indicate?

That the object is moving at a constant speed

What is the acceleration of a car that is traveling at a rate of 2m/s and continues at that rate as it completes a turn towards the West?

Acceleration = 0m/s2 West - The only change is the direction of the moving object
