Winterberry Public School Review

Winterberry Public School is a charter school that takes inspiration from the Waldorf method of education. This K-8 public school is art-integrated and follows standards-based education and Whole Child Curriculum. It focuses on the whole child through art, music and movement.

Initiated and founded by parents and Winterberry community who saw a public school as a positive force for their children’s future, Winterberry Public School, part of the Anchorage School District, started its operations in 2005. Today, it serves around 200 students. It has from the beginning been an unwavering advocate for Winterberry’s founding vision of using Waldorf methods and continues to do so.

Any child residing in the Municipality of Anchorage is eligible to join Winterberry Public School, through the lottery system. The school provides access to places of natural beauty, outdoor play and other learning areas. The class sizes are small with 15-25 students in each and the school uses blackboard, cubbies and natural corner as the teaching methods.

Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities, Reading and Writing, Foreign language and Arts are taught. Students also enjoy numerous other activities that involve practical work, such as knitting, fabric arts, house building, gardening and book binding. Through these activities, children learn patience, perseverance, imagination and coordination; and develop fine motor skills and intellectual development.
