Vaughn Next Century Learning Center Review

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center opened in 1993 to provide families an alternative to traditional schools with a community based school. The school offers a variety of multiple programs as well as resources and learning opportunities for students in kindergarten through 12th grades. The school offers multiple assessment tools, accelerated English learning and standards based instruction. The student body is 97% Hispanic.

Along with core subjects, other activities and events are scheduled throughout the year.

The opinion of the school is very diverse. Some parents and students stated that the school is wonderful with excellent teachers while others expressed that the teachers are not present the majority of the time and that the classes have substitute teachers. A few students expressed that the school does not provide attention to students and they do not have a voice at all. Some parents stated that the lower grades were very good but once you get to middle school you can see that leadership is just not there.

The Academic Performance Index increased 11 points to 807. Many parents were very pleased that the school is now meeting the statewide goal; however, they are not happy at all with the 5 out of 10 API statewide rank.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 69% of 2nd graders passed the English exam with the state average at 58%, 73% of 3rd graders passed the math exam with the state at 69%, 47% of 6th graders passed the English exam with the state at 59%, and 48% of 8th graders passed the history exam with the state average at 52%.

the California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the English exam was 95% with the state at 83% and in math 95% with the state at 84%.

The school is providing a quality education; however, if you have any concerns it would be in your best interest to take a tour before enrollment.
