University Preparatory Academy Review

University Preparatory Academy opened in 2007 to serve students in 7th through 10th grades with the goal to expand to include 11th and 12th grades. The school offers a rigorous college preparatory program with small class sizes while integrating the performing arts into the curriculum. The school is diverse with ethnicity being Hispanic, White, Asian, African American, Filipino, American Indian, and Pacific Islander.

Along with core subjects, the school offers a variety of activities, student clubs, and athletics for students that wish to participate. Parents and students alike enjoy the activities and are glad that the school offers such a diverse blend of activities.

Parents are very happy with the results they see from their children. Most expressed their children are becoming problem solvers and are very interested in learning. Some students love the fact that the school will allow you to create, manage and run a club at the school and allow students to have an opinion. The main complaint was the lack of sports like baseball and football.

The Academic Performance Index increased 17 points to 895. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are quite happy with the score and love the fact that they rank 10 out of 10 in the API statewide rank.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 87% of 7th graders passed the English exam with the state at 62%, 22% of 8th graders passed the Algebra I exam with the state at 49%, and 87% of 9th graders passed the biology exam with the state at 60%. Parents were not disappointed with any of the low percentages as it provides with teachers with information so they know what subjects need to be addressed.

The school is providing a good education in a safe environment. To ensure the learning environment is best for your child, you should take a tour before enrollment.
