University Charter Middle School at CSU Channel Islands Review

University Charter Middle School at CSU Channel Islands opened in 2006 to provide students in 6th through 8th grades with a dual immersion program as well as a language enrichment program. The student body is 60% Hispanic, 27% White, 5% African American, 4% Asian, 2% Filipino, 1% Pacific Islander, and 1% unspecified.

Along with a rigorous curriculum the school offers differentiated instruction, community service projects, physical education, project based units and instrumental music program. Extra curricular activities include Dolphin book club, robotics, peer tutor program, math club, science fair, Friends of Rachel Club, student leadership, concert band, beginning band, and yearbook committee. Sports offered are flag football, volleyball, basketball, track, and cheerleading.

Parents are pleased with the dual immersion program and that the school does not rely on textbooks to provide a hands-on learning environment. Some parents complained that there are not enough textbooks for all students, but other stated that the lack of textbooks is certainly not a problem. Students love going to school and their teachers.

The Academic Performance Index increased 35 points to 783. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are pleased that the score jumped 35 points but are not happy that they have not reached the goal and are only ranked 4 out of 10 for the API statewide rank.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 59% of 6th graders matched the state average of students passing the English exam, 53% of 7th graders passed the math exam with the state at 52%, and 60% of 8th graders passed the Algebra I exam with the state average at 49%.

Overall, the school is providing a quality education for students that will prepare them for the remainder of their educational years. If you have any worries, you should take a tour prior to enrolling your child.
