Stella Middle Charter Academy Review

Stella Middle Charter Academy opened in 2003 to give families an alternative to traditional schools. The school serves students in 5th through 8th grades with a quality education that includes a mandatory summer camp. The student is predominantly Hispanic with an 86 percentile. The core curriculum focuses on language arts, history, math, and science.

Along with core subjects, the school offers an after school program as well as sports for those that wish to join. The sports available include basketball, baseball, softball, 8-man football, soccer, flag football, cheer, and cross-country.

Parents had mixed comments regarding the school. Many parents stated the school is very safe and caring, while others believe that the school is a bit on the strict side. One example they noted was just goofing around with friends got some students detention. Other parents are very pleased with the discipline and structure that does not allow for any type of misbehavior or bullying. Students really enjoy attending the school but would like to see more activities offered.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 18 points to 807. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are not worried about the drop in the score as they are still above the statewide goal.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mainly below state averages except for 63% of 7th graders passing the English exam with the state average at 62% and 85% of 8th graders passing the English exam with the state at 59%.

The school is providing a quality education, however, if you are concerned with the California standard tests it would be a good idea to talk with teachers and learn more about these results before enrolling your child.
