STAR Charter School Review

STAR Charter School opened in 2001 as an alternative to regular public school. The school offers an education for students in pre-kindergarten through 8th grades. The school provides the educational tools for core subjects along with technical and social skills to ensure students are receiving a well-rounded education that will ensure their success. The study body is predominately Native American. The school works with students on an individual basis to ensure that the needs of every student are met. Students work along side the community to learn more about the history, culture, and the needs of their community. The core subjects are important but the culture and history of the community is just as important and is blended with the core subjects to create a fun learning environment.

Along with core subjects, STAR Charter School offers other activities including drama, film production, sculpture, drawing, basketball, cross-country, physical education classes, and science & technology.

Parents are very pleased with the school and the way the staff and community work together to ensure students are learning about their heritage and history while instilling the pride they need in their ancestors. The only complaint heard from parents is that the school needs to work on the curriculum and academics. The percentage of students passing the AIMS exams is a concern with the majority of parents even though they love the school, staff, administration, and counselors at the school that are dedicated and nurturing. A few parents noted that the school is improving and doing better in the last few years.

The percentage of students that passed the AIMS series of exams in third and fourth grades was below state average in all courses. Fifth graders did better with math percentages being above average but other courses were below average. The percentage of students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades were below state average in all courses.

You should take a tour of the school and learn if it is a good fit for your child even if the test scores are below average. The school is improving and it may just be the perfect school to encourage your child to excel.
