SOAR Charter Academy Review

SOAR Charter Academy opened in 2010 to provide students in kindergarten through 6th grades with a standards based curriculum while focusing on character development. The main curriculum may be a standard curriculum, but the school also offers high performing and acceleration curriculum. The student body is diverse with 37% Hispanic, 30% White, 17% African American, 15% unspecified, and 1% Filipino.

Along with core subjects, the school offers extra curricular activities and student clubs which include drawing, painting, chorus, creative writing, dance, drama, poetry, arts & crafts, dance club, sewing, student newspaper, cooking, gardening, science, student council, technology, yoga, and yearbook. Sports offered include baseball, flag football, basketball, soccer, kickball, and volleyball.

Most parents stated that the school is a wonderful safe and caring learning environment. Parents expressed the teachers are excellent and with the small class size the environment is more like family. Students love their teachers and are pleased with all the activities the school offers. Most parents are very happy with the large majority of field trips the students enjoy every year.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 35 points to 763. The statewide goal is 800. Parents expressed their concern over such a huge drop in the score and have talked with teachers to learn how they help their children.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was below average across all grade levels and all subjects.

According to comments of parents and students, the school is a wonderful and caring environment. However, if you have any concerns with the exam scores it would be a good idea to talk with administration and teachers prior to enrolling your child.
