Sixth Street Prep School Review

Sixth Street Prep School opened in 2000 to provide students in kindergarten through 6th grades with a quality education. The school focuses on the state standards and core subjects; however, the school allows students to learn in small groups as well as special need groups when needed. The curriculum is college prep and expects students to work in order to reach their highest potential. The student body is diverse but is predominantly Hispanic.

At this time, there are no extra curricular activities, student clubs, or sports. This is very disappointing to the majority of students that would like to participate in other activities. Parents stated they would also like to see more activities that the entire family can enjoy.

Parent and student opinions are all over the place. Many are not fond of the principal that has in place for the last three years. Most stated that API scores have dropped since she became principal, she does not return telephone calls, and will not talk to parents. The majority stated that teachers are very nice but if you go any farther such as to the office for assistance, you are met with a cold and often rude office person. Students are not doing as well the last few years and some want to switch schools. On the other hand, there are a fair amount of parents and students that really enjoy the school and have not seen any problems with administration.

The Academic Performance Index dropped 12 points to 933. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were not happy with the drop in points but were not concerned at all since they are still quite a bit above the statewide goal and the API statewide rank is 10 out of 10.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was all above average across all grade levels and all subjects.

Overall, the school is doing an excellent job of providing students with a quality education. If you have any concerns due to some of the comments of parents, it would be a good idea to talk with teachers and ensure the learning environment is a good fit for your child before enrolling.
