Shearer Charter School Review

Shearer Charter School opened in 1999 to offers families an alternative to traditional school that will cater to the whole child. The school serves students in pre-kindergarten through fifth. The school offers excellent teachers that work with students on an individual basis. Within the curriculum, students are involved in music, art, and physical education. There are no other extra curricular activities; however, field trips are often blended with learning trips. The student body population is diverse which includes 87% Hispanic, 7% White, 1% Asian, and 6% unspecified.

Most parents are very pleased with the curriculum, which includes computer classes, music, art, and physical education classes. Parents said the teachers go above and beyond to ensure the students enjoy learning and want to become life long learners. A few parents on the other hand, stated that academically the school is quite a bit below other schools in the area. The school does focus on English learners as mentioned by several parents. Students said they really enjoy going to school and love their teachers.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 18 points from the previous year to a score of 749. The statewide goal is 800. Some parents were concerned about the drop in score, while others were not as worried as they know it is the best school for their children.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was below average or met the averages of the state. Parents are working with teachers to learn how they can help improve the percentages.

The school is providing a good education for students in a safe and nurturing environment. If you do have any concerns, it would be best to take a tour to learn if the school is the best fit for your family.
