River Valley Charter School Review

River Valley Charter School opened in Lakeside in 1997 to offer families the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful learning environment that still provides a strong home connection while still maintaining a strong home connection for students in 7th through 12th grades. The curriculum is challenging, standards based, and provides individual attention for to ensure the success of each student.

The school schedule is based on a college model, whereas students will attend every core class two times each week for 75 minutes with the rest of the week for independent study. Each class has a maximum of 18 students with various instructional methods such as presentation, discussions, seminars, and lectures.

Parents are very pleased with the teaching formats offered and believe the curriculum is excellent. Students stated they really enjoy going to school and that teachers are very kind. Most students did express they would like to see sports and student clubs offered. The best thing that parents and students both are happy about is the college prep curriculum and small town feel of the school.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase of 11 points from the previous year to a score of 936. The statewide goal is 800. Parents could not be more pleased with the score. Teachers are highly praised for their efforts to stay above the statewide goal.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was above average across the board in all grade levels and all subjects. Parents stated that this a wonderful sign that the school is doing an exceptional job of providing their students with a wonderful education.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The percentage of students passing the English exam was 100% in English with the average at 83% and in math 100% passed with the average at 84%.

With scores and percentages as seen above, you can rest assured the school is providing students with an excellent education that will ensure they are prepared for college or to join the workforce upon graduation. If you do have concerns, it would be a good idea to talk with teachers and other parents to ensure the school is the best fit for your family.
