River Oak Charter School Review

River Oak Charter School opened in 1999 for students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The school offers a very unique learning environment that allows students to be creative. The curriculum is based on the Waldorf educational philosophy. The school does not offer extra curricular activities or sports but weaves storytelling, poetry, drama, crafts, music and art into the curriculum. Students are taught to learn with their hands, hearts, and heads, which will help them, grow individually.

Art, music, drama, storytelling, poetry and crafts are woven throughout the curriculum. Our students learn with their heads, hearts and hands, building on a foundation of creativity that grows with the child to balance imagination, critical thinking and academic excellence.

Most parents are thrilled with all that the school offers stating the school creates a curriculum individually for each student while blending in a variety of activities such as strings, handwork, band, foreign languages, and games, which makes learning more fun. Students really enjoy the school and their teachers. Parents expressed the school is safe and nurturing which is a huge plus when it comes to getting kids involved in wanting to learn.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase of 28 points from the previous year to a score of 786. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are very pleased with the huge increase and are looking forward to meeting the state goal soon.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mainly below state average. Examples of those that were above average include 76% of 5th graders passing the English exam with the average at 63% and 62% passing the science exam with the state average at 60% and 73% of 6th graders passed the English exam with the average at 59% and 62% passing math with the average at 55%.

River Oak Charter School is providing students with a quality education and working harder each year to ensure their students are meeting or exceeding standards set forth by the state. If you have any concerns, it would be a good idea to visit the school.
