Rite of Passage Charter High School Review

Rite of Passage Charter High School opened in 1994 to provide the community with an alternative to traditional schools within a residential treatment facility. The school serves students in 9th through 12th grades. The school focuses on academics, vocational training and athletics within a year round school setting.

Along with core subjects, the school offers sports and other extracurricular activities for adults and students. The school trains its students with a vocational trade to ensure that after high school they have a skill that will translate into the workforce. Some students expressed they are very happy with the vocational training but would like to have more options when it comes to extra curricular activities and sports.

Parents are thrilled with the curriculum that focuses on young students as well as young adults that may have otherwise had no opportunity to develop a work skill or gain a GED. The school works well at providing a quality education, athletics and counseling for every student’s needs. A few students stated that without this school, they would not have graduated high school or learned a trade.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decrease of 134 points from the previous year to a score of 485. The statewide goal is 800. Parents know that the school is working with at risk students and some that have been left behind; however, they are not pleased with such a huge drop. The school is working daily to improve these numbers.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was below the state averages across the 9th, 10th and 11th grade exams. While the numbers are low, that gives the school the motivation to work harder.

California uses the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to test high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. The students at Rite of Passage Charter High School fell below the state averages in these areas as well.

The school is providing students with the education that they may have otherwise not had the opportunity to achieve. If your student is one that is at risk of not graduating high school, then this school may be the best option. To learn if the school is a good fit, you should take a tour and talk with parents that have students enrolled.
