Presidio Schools Review

Presidio Schools is a group of charter schools offering students the opportunity to receive a quality education in a nurturing and safe learning environment. The school works with all students in the area including homeless and adjudicated youth. The Presidio High School is located in Tucson, which opened in 1996. The school provides an education to students in kindergarten through 12th grades with an average of 380 students enrolled per year. The school takes pride in the fact that the teachers and staff work with the whole student to ensure they succeed and are taught diversity, responsibility, and the value of respect.

The curriculum offered at Presidio Schools is more advanced than the requirements of the state. With the small class size, teachers are able to work more closely with students to ensure their success.

Along with core subjects, Presidio Schools provide college prep programs, summer prep programs, community college courses, and college presentations. Since the school works with the whole child, academics are not the only aspects of the educational tools used. The school also offers extra curricular activities such as technical design, technical production, band, chorus, instrumental music lesson, jazz band, theory, rock band, drama, dance, creative writing, architecture, design, drawing, photography, painting, sculpture, printmaking, basketball, cheerleading, volleyball. The school has several student clubs including gardening, study buddy club, gardening, National Honor Society, martial arts, sewing club, science club, newspaper, and student government.

Parents have very different opinions regarding the school. Some state the school administration is rude and will not answer questions while others express just how great the staff is doing. Most expressed the teachers are wonderful and work well with students.

The best way to learn if a school is providing a quality education is to look at the AIMS series of tests. This measures if students are mastering core subjects. The percentage of students that passed the exams can be compared to the average of students across the state that passed the exams. The percentage of students that passed the exams was higher than state averages in all core subjects (math, science, reading, and writing) than the state averages.

The school seems to be an excellent job in providing students with the educational tools needed to succeed and become productive members of their communities.
