Pivot Online Charter School – San Diego Review

Pivot Charter School opened their San Diego campus in 2010 to provide students in 6th through 12th grades with an alternative to traditional school settings. On average, the school has an enrollment of 115 students per year. The school offers a completely online standards based curriculum. Students can receive support on-site when needed or online as well along with the ability completely work online or to visit the on-site location for some classes. The flexibility offered allows students to learn at their own pace. Many students and parents alike stated they are very happy with the flexibility and curriculum offered. Most also stated the teachers are dedicated and helpful.

Along with core subjects, the school does not offer student clubs or sports. The school offers a few extra curricular activities, which include video production, painting, graphic design, and creative writing. Several students are disappointed that the school does not offer any type of sports or even a club like yearbook. It would be great to be able to have their own yearbook as explained by many students.

Parents and students alike are very pleased with the curriculum and the caring teachers. Quite a few parents stated that they have seen a marked improvement in their child’s attitude toward school now that they can work at their own pace. Students said they really like the field trips and the on-site help teachers provide. The school as expressed by students is providing them with a wonderful opportunity to learn and be prepared for life.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline of 32 points from the previous year to a score of 702. Parents were not happy with this score and are talking with teachers and administration to learn how to raise the score.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics.

The results of the California Standards Tests were not available at the time of this writing. The math exam included in the California High School Exit Exam was available which showed 92% of students passed the exam with the state average at 84%.

Since the majority of the results of the exams were not available, it would be a good idea to talk with teachers regarding the test scores. Since the school is mainly online, it would be in your best interest to determine if your child will do well working alone at home in order to succeed before enrollment.
