Pacoima Charter School Review

Pacoima Charter School opened in 2003 to provide students in Kindergarten through 5th grades an option for their education needs. The school prepares students for educational success with a county mandated curriculum while focusing on those students that are learning English. At risk students are also the main goal of the staff and teachers at Pacoima Charter School.

Along with core subjects, the school offers a few activities for the students to participate in. That includes student council, after school programs, physical education, tutoring and a super kid’s adding club. The major complaint from parents and students is the lack of activities; many would like to see more clubs offered.

The opinion of the school is very high with parents proud of the achievements of their children with a large number of students raising their reading levels since they started to school here. The parents love that the staff and teachers work with each child so that their success is the number one priority. Students expressed they like the school but as mentioned above they would like to see more than just after school programs. Some students stated that the teachers are very nice and helpful. Some parents expressed that the staff are very helpful and encouraging.

The Academic Performance Index increased by 4 points from the previous year to a score of 787. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are pleased with the increase but are working with the school to increase the score to meet the state goal.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentages of students passing the exams were mostly below the state averages. While this is not ideal the school is working to increase the test scores on a daily basis. Parents appreciate this effort and work with their students at home to help with the test scores.

Overall, the school is providing students with a quality education and striving to improve. It would still be a good idea to ensure the environment is one that will be a fit for your family.
