Pacific View Charter School – Eureka Review

Pacific View Charter School opened their Eureka campus in 2000 to provide students in Kindergarten through 12th grades with an option over traditional school settings. The school prepares students for college as well as to join the workforce with small class sizes and a home schooled, independent study format. This involves the parents in the academic process, which is a huge blessing for many parents.

Along with core subjects, the school offers no other extra curricular activities. There are school events that arise each year and are listed on the website. With the freedom of online learning children have more time to spend with family. This is a slight downside expressed by parents and students. Students would like to see more activities where they can enjoy various clubs such as yearbook and sports like basketball.

The opinion of the school is very mixed with most parents proud of the achievements of their children while other parents expressed their concern over the number of students that do not follow rules and are still attending the school. The major complaints from parents is that there is little homework and drug issues. Students expressed they like the school and its small size but as mentioned above they would like to see more extracurricular activities. Some students mentioned they have seen other students with drugs on campus, which is a concern.

The Academic Performance Index an increase of 11 points from the previous year to a score of 651. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are not happy with the number, but are satisfied that the score has increased since last year.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was not fully available at this time. The scores that were posted were below the state average percentages which showed room for improvement for the students at Pacific View Charter School – Eureka.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students at Pacific View Charter School – Eureka did okay with the exit exam with 81% passing the English exam with the state average at 83% and 67% in math with the state at 84%.

Overall, the school is providing students with an education that is better than traditional schools and improvements are being made each day. It would be in your best interest to ask questions regarding the exams to learn if the school is meeting state standards and take a tour to meet the teachers as well.
