Options for Youth – Hermosa Beach, Inc. Review

Options for Youth opened their Hermosa Beach, Inc. campus in 2009 to serve at risk students with an alternative to traditional schools. The school serves students in grades seventh through 12th grades. The curriculum is one that offers independent study as well as small group instructional formats.

Along with core subjects, students have the opportunity to participate in various extra curricular activities, sports, and clubs including student council, field trips, community service, prom, chess club, board game club, Mic club, band, dance team, drama club, Fantasy Role Playing Game Club, and sports like bowling, soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, and kickball. Not all activities are available at each campus.

The opinion of the school is positive with most parents very happy that the school is providing their students with a second chance to graduate from high school. Most parents stated that the school is very safe and is often strict with the rules, but they are so happy that bullying and other issues are not a problem here. Several students stated they really enjoy going to school and do feel safe here. Teachers, as reported by students, are very dedicated to helping then succeed and are very respectful, which is wonderful.

The Academic Performance Index increased 42 points from the previous year to 637. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are very pleased with this figure even though the school still has not made it to the state goal.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was below state averages in all grade levels and subjects. This was not seen as a major problem to most parents that explained their children are doing much better here than they were at other schools. They are very proud of the improvements in their grades.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students saw scores of 71% passing the English exam with the state average at 83% and 60% in math with the state at 84%. Parents would like to see more students passing these exams but are proud that the numbers are getting stronger every year.

Overall, the school is providing students with a second chance at a quality education in a safe and nurturing learning environment. It would be in your best interest to ask questions regarding the exams to learn how you can help your child.
