Opportunities for Learning – Capistrano Review

Opportunities for Learning opened their Capistrano campus in 2005 for at risk students in 7th through 12th grades. The school offers part time study as well as year round scheduling along with home based programs. Programs available include core knowledge, gifted, direct instruction, accelerated credit learning, advancement placement courses, independent study, individually guided instruction, standards based, and virtual school. The school serves students that are considered at risk to achieve their high school diploma. These students are often ones that are ethnic minorities, socio-economically challenged, parenting teens, pregnant, and students that have dropped out of school or are not attending. The school has a diverse student population, which includes 15% Hispanic, 1% African American, 80% White, 1% Asian, and 3% unspecified.

Parents are truly excited that the school opened in their community and is helping their student obtain their high school diploma. Student like the school and the teachers and they way in which they receive individualized lesson plans. Parents explained that the teachers are very nice and help students with any issues to ensure they achieve their high school diploma. The one complaint from students is the lack of sports of any kind.

The Academic Performance Index declined 13 points from the previous year to 766. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were not happy to see that the performance index dropped from the previous year but know the teachers are working to improve the score.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was not available at the time of this writing.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students at the school saw scores of 90% passing the English exam with the state average at 83% and 94% in math with the state at 84%. Parents are very proud of these figures showing that students and teachers are working very hard to achieve success.

Overall, the school is providing students with an exceptional education. It would be in your best interest to learn more about the curriculum and the environment to ensure it is a good fit for your family.
