Omega McDowell Campus – La Puerta High School Review

The Omega McDowell Campus opened their charter school at La Puerta High School in 2003 to provide students in 9th through 12th grades with an alternative to public education. The school offers a learning environment that gives students the ability to retain knowledge while developing leadership and quality character skills.

The goals of Omega McDowell Campus are to give students a safe and secure learning environment where students can achieve their goals and reach their full potential. The student body is predominantly Hispanic.

Parents are pleased that the school offers their children the ability to learn and to succeed while learning life and work skills. The charter school is something that was needed in the neighborhood. Students on the other hand, state that the turn over of teachers is high. Students complained that the school does not have a counselor to ensure that credits are being met or to help students prepare their curriculum to ensure they receive the credits needed to graduate. Since teachers were always changing, the learning experience is not as good as it should be, as the teachers mainly substitutes were not that involved with the students.

In order to graduate high school, students in the state of Arizona must pass the AIMS series of exams which measures if students are mastering core subjects. Tenth graders did not do well with 53% passing the exam in reading while the state average was 78%, in science 0% of students passed the exam with the state average at 42%, in writing 42% passed with the average at 68%, and in math 22% with the average at 60%.

The percentage of students that passed the exam across the board was below the average of students that passed the series of tests across the state. It would be in your best interest to check out other schools in the area, talk with parents, and teachers to learn more about the performance of the students. Since only a few students passed the exams the amount of students graduating are below state averages.
