Omega Alpha Academy School – Douglas Review

Omega Alpha Academy School opened their charter school campus in Douglas in 2001. On average, the school has on average 260 students enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grades. The school offers a teaching and learning environment that helps student retain and develop good character as well as leadership skills. Along with core subjects, the school offers computer arts, band, orchestra, painting, ceramics, chorus, physical education classes, basketball, cheerleading, yearbook, science & technology, and newspaper.

Comments of teachers, parents, and former students are quite varied with some praising the school and others stating to look elsewhere for quality education. The school has a high turn over of teachers and the principal seems to change every year. On the other hand, one teacher explained the teachers and staff are a great team that works with parents and students to ensure that all students receive a quality education. Parents stated the school provides the educational tools students need to succeed and that their children are doing so much better after enrolling in this school when compared to other schools in the area. One student expressed that when the leadership changed in the school, the atmosphere was not the same and that teachers were not as attentive to students that needed the extra help to learn.

Students at the Douglas campus participated in the AIMS series of exams that measures if students are mastering core subjects. A look at the test scores will give you an idea if the school is providing the quality education you desire for your children. Third graders were below state average in reading by 30%, in writing by 25%, and in math by 12%. Fourth graders were below average in reading by 32%, in science by 30%, in writing by 20%, and in math by 25%. Fifth graders were below average in reading by 22%, in writing by 25%, and in math by 30%. Sixth graders were below average in reading by 40%, in writing by 47%, and in math by 43%. Seventh graders were below state averages by 10% in reading, 12% in writing, and 20% in math. Eighth graders were below state average by 24%, in science by 37%, in writing by 25%, but were above state average by 40% in math. Tenth graders were below average in reading by 40%, in science by 32%, in writing by 44%, and in math by 30%.

With the percentages of students that passed the exams being quite a bit lower than state averages except for 8th graders being above average in math, it would be in your best interest to learn more about the school, the curriculum and why the scores are so low before enrolling your child.
