Ocean Charter School – South Campus Review

Ocean Charter School opened their south campus on Culver Boulevard in 2004 to provide students with a curriculum that is engaging and interesting to produce life long learners. The school serves students in kindergarten through 8th grades with an average enrollment of 250 students per year. The school offers a Waldorf education that integrates an arts inclusive curriculum with multi-age classrooms, small class sizes, and an education platform that encourages ecological awareness, social awareness, and individual achievement. The arts inclusive curriculum provides students with the opportunity to enjoy such things as painting, drawing, games, music, drama, movement, sculpture, handwork, and gardening.

Most parents are impressed with the Waldorf method that reaches out to the whole child instead of focusing only on academics. Parents expressed that their children are really enjoying school and do not want to miss one day. The majority of students stated that school was fun. There are parents on the other end of the board stating the school is a very stressful environment on the teachers, which falls upon the students. One parent stated that bullying was an issue at the school and it seems that administration is not concerned with the workload they put on teachers or the issues that students have with other students.

The Academic Performance Index increased 10 points from the previous year to 872. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are very pleased with the increase.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was above average in all grade levels and all subjects.

Ocean Charter School – South Campus is doing a great job when you look at test scores, however, with the comments of a few parents, it would be a good idea to visit the school and talk with other parents before enrolling your child.
