NOVA Academy Early College High Review

NOVA Academy Early College High is a unique educational facility that offers students in 9th through 12th grades with various opportunities besides academics. The school provides extra activities that help the student prepare for the real world via child abuse prevention education, family counseling, vocational training, and career counseling, to name a few. The school offers a diverse student body that is comprised of 96% Hispanic, 2% White, 2% unspecified, and 1% African American.

Along with core subjects, the school offers sports and other activities that students can participate in such as Anime Club, Bible Club, Book Club, Cooking Club, Dance Club, Gay/Straight Alliance, Guitar Club, Hiking Club, Middle College National Consortium, and Volleyball Club, to name a few. Students stated the extra curricular activities and sports offered are great additions.

The major opinion of parents is that the school is prefect for their children. Many commented that their children have the opportunity to take vocational classes as early as 10th grade and that counselors as well as teachers work with students to plan their career or their college attendance. Other parents stated how good the teachers and staff communicate with them regarding their children’s progress. Students expressed they love the school and are excited about their future due to the help they have received from teachers, staff, and counselors.

The Academic Performance Index declined 2 points from the previous year to 713. The statewide goal is 800. Parents were not too concerned with the small drop. Some parents are working with teachers to help their students do better in testing.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Examples include 10th grade 5% in Biology with the average at 43% and 9th grade English at 57%, which was the same as the average.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students at New Millennium Secondary school did very well with the exit exam with 80% passing the English exam with the state average at 83% and 90% in math with the state at 84%. Parents and students alike were very proud of the scores of these exams.

Overall, the school is providing students with a quality education. If you have any concerns, it would be a good idea to talk with teachers and take a tour of the school before enrolling your child.
