North Woods Discovery School Review

North Woods Discovery School opened in 2001 as a charter school for students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The school provides a very unique learning environment that is safe and encouraging while allowing students to be creative. The school focuses on problem solving as well as science, math, and technology.

Along with core subjects, the school offers painting and band along with sports like cross-country, volleyball, soccer, and softball. The students expressed they really like the other activities but do wish there were some student clubs to join.

Parents stated the school offers a nurturing and kind learning environment where each student is able to learn at their level. Some parents expressed how much they like the opportunity for their children to be able to take advanced classes as well as being allowed the time they need for other subjects that cause them issues. Most parents love the school and the fact that the school takes students on several field trips and has all kinds of events the entire family can enjoy. Overall, parents stated their children are more respectful, better behaved and emotionally advanced. The school works with each child individually catering to their learning style, which is truly an added bonus. Students and parents really like the teachers and the caring family like atmosphere. One parent did complain of bullying, however, other parents stated there is a zero tolerance for bullying and they have not had any issues.

The Academic Performance Index declined 27 points from the previous year to 770. The statewide goal is 800. Most parents expressed a bit of concern over the drop in the index, but stated that the teachers are working on improving the score.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed. Second graders were above state averages in both English and math. Third graders were below in English and above in math. Fourth, sixth, and seventh graders were below state averages in both English and math. Fifth graders were below in English and math but above in science. Eighth graders were above in all subjects. Parents are not as concerned with the percentages as students are doing better and learning in safe environment.

Overall, the school is providing students with a quality education. It would be in your best interest to talk with teachers to ensure the learning methods will fit your child’s needs.
