North County Trade Tech High School Review

North County Trade Tech High School opened in 2008 to provide students with a unique education geared toward post grad education in the construction industry. The school provides students with a blend of workforce and academic competencies that are necessary to possess in the construction and building industry. The student body is diverse with 39% Hispanic or Latino, 39% White, 15% unspecified, and smaller populations of African American, Asian, and Pacific Islander.

Parents and students alike really enjoy the small class sizes that allow more individual attention, which helps students learn without interruptions. The school provides courses unlike most traditional schools that students are very pleased to learn such as carpentry, drafting, and engineering. Most parents are very impressed with the school, the courses offered, and the devotion they see from staff and teachers. Most parents and students alike stated that the staff and the teachers go beyond the norm to ensure that each student receives the help needed to succeed in a fun and safe learning environment.

The Academic Performance Index declined 36 points from the previous year to 675. The statewide goal is 800. Parents and students were not happy with this number but are working with teachers to improve the score.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was below average in all grades and all subjects, which was another disappointment stated by parents.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. Students at North County Trade Tech High School showed better scores with this exam than others with 72% passing the English exam with the state at 83% and in math 86% with the state average at 84%.

Overall, the school is providing students with the tools needed to join the construction industry. If you have any concerns regarding the exams scores it would be best to talk with staff to ensure the school is the best option for your child before enrolling.
