New Jerusalem Charter School Review

New Jerusalem Charter School opened in 1999 for students in kindergarten though 8th grades. The school offers an alternative to traditional school setting within a safe and nurturing learning environment. The school believes in providing students with the skills needed to be prepared for entering high school and beyond. The diverse population of the school provides students with a real world atmosphere with 59% White, 29% Hispanic or Latino, 5% African American, with the rest of the student body being Asian, Pacific Islander, and Filipino.

Parents are very pleased with the curriculum and other programs the school offers. Many commented on the large library that was purchased via the Parent-Teacher Club. Most parents stated that the school is amazing with not only caring teachers but also parents that want to be involved in their children’s education.

Along with core subjects, New Jerusalem Charter School offers other programs such as accelerated reader, volleyball, basketball, and soccer. The computer lab is a welcome addition that offers 35 workstations for students.

Parents expressed that the school is providing an exceptional education with caring teachers. As reported by parents the staff and schoolwork with students on an individual basis to ensure all their needs are met. Students said they like the teachers but in the higher grades would like to see more clubs and activities. Many stated that the sports are okay, but there are not many other activities such as band or choir for those that enjoy music.

The Academic Performance Index dropped 13 points from the previous to 787. The statewide goal is 800. Parents are still pleased with this figure as students are working hard to improve the score with teachers that want their students to succeed.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The percentage of students passing the exams was up and down. Examples include 70% of 4th graders passed the English exam with the state average at 67%, 43% of 5th graders passed the science exam with the state at 60%, and 29% of 8th graders passed the history exam with the average at 52%.

New Jerusalem Charter School is providing the community with a safe and caring learning environment. Since most parents expressed how much better their children are doing in this school than previous ones, then the school is doing a better than adequate job. To ensure the learning environment is one in which your child will excel, you should take a tour of the school before enrolling.
