Nevada City School of the Arts Review

Nevada City School of the Arts opened in 1996 for students in grades Kindergarten through eighth. The school provides a collaborative community, which nurtures artistic expression as another way of knowing the world. Art becomes the backbone for learning and self-exploration for creative success.

Parents of Nevada City School of the Arts love the focus on the arts that the school provides. Not only do the teachers focus on art they take their students out on field studies to explore ecological and historical areas. The school also offers a sports program, which pleases both parents and students alike. Parents stated that the school offers a well-rounded amount of extra curricular activities, which is usually not found at other schools in the area.

The Academic Performance Index showed a score of 773 which was down 18 points from the previous year. Parents and teachers are pushing each day to raise that number to compare with the statewide goal of 800.

For parents the addition of the arts pushes their kids to be creative without bounds at Nevada City School of the Arts. They say that the teachers have been some of the best they have met and they can see improvement in their child’s grades. Some students felt that the work was too laid back as if they were not accomplishing much. Overall, both parents and students seem to love the school, especially the arts program. Some students expressed they would like the curriculum to be a more challenging.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The test results for the students at Nevada City School of the Arts showed that the 6th, 7th and 8th grade students excelled in at least one if not both subjects that they were tested on. The same could not be said of the younger grade levels.

The school is providing a good basis on the arts, but since a few students stated they would like a more challenging curriculum it would be a good idea to learn more about the curriculum and if the school offers advanced courses before enrolling your child.
