NEA Community Learning Center Review

NEA Community Learning Center opened in 2009 for students in Kindergarten through 11th grades. This school focuses on the Alameda Community Learning Center and its curriculum/values. The program is award winning and has been quite successful.

Along with core subjects students are offered an arts enrichment program. This helps to get them interested in the arts, performances, lectures, etc. Music is also integrated including musical theater, violin and Spanish courses. Students enjoy the arts programs but stated that there are no other activities or sports offered. Many would like to see sports such as football and basketball as well as journalism or student government.

The teachers are cited as the highest asset of NEA Community Learning Center by parents. They are well educated and they truly care about the kids. Parents also love the small classes and the flexibility of the curriculum. It has been a great experience for both parents and students. The students stated they love the focus on the arts that many were not interested in until they came to NEA Community Learning Center. They love going to class and say they are never bored.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase in academic growth from 837 to 851. Parents are very happy with this number as the state standard is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

On the grade 4 Math exam 75% of students passed with the state at 71%. Moving along to the 8th grade Science exam 79% passed and the state was at 66%. They did fall below the average on the Algebra I exam with 34% passing and the state average at 49%.

California uses the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to test high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. At NEA Community Learning Center 86% passed the English exam and 89% passed the Math exam passing the state average on both.

The school is providing a quality education that does provide a great arts focus. If you have any concerns, it would be in your best interest to take a tour of the school.
