Montezuma Middle School Review

Montezuma Middle School opened their charter school in Tempe in 2002 for students in sixth through 8th grades. The school offers an alternative to public education while focusing on core subjects while instilling respect for oneself and others. Along with core subjects, the school realizes students need time to enjoy other activities including film production, computer arts martial arts, bicycling, martial arts, physical education classes, wrestling, and multimedia. Vocational programs offered include automotive and technology. The entire student body speaks Spanish at home as their first language.

Parents are very happy that this school is there for their children and providing them a quality education. All parents were pleased with the school and staff. Students enjoy attending a school where they fit in and have no worries about bullies.

The AIMS series of exams show a completely different thing than what parents stated with percentage of students in seventh grade passing the exam in reading being below average by 30%, in writing by 3%, and in math by 21%. Eighth graders were not much better with percentages almost 40% below state average in reading, 53% below average in science, 35% below in writing, and 40% below in math.

It would not be a good idea to enroll your child in Montezuma Middle School unless you learn more about the low percentages of students passing the exams as in the state of Arizona in order to graduate high school must pass the series of exams. Talking with parents, teachers, and staff may help you make a decision. Also, ask about the curriculum and learn if students are trying catch up on their grades. This may be the reason for the poor test results.
