Media Arts and Entertainment High School Review

Media Arts and Entertainment High School opened as a charter school in 2009. The school serves students in 9th through 12th grades in communities that are known as low income, underachieving, and overcrowded. The school works with students on an individual basis to ensure they are prepared to enter college and have the self-confidence to succeed.

Along with core subjects, Media Arts and Entertainment High School offers a few extra curricular activities and student clubs which are basketball, cheerleading, film & drama club, leadership, Outrageous Dance Team, Running Team, soccer, volleyball, and yearbook.

All comments were generally positive from parents. Most expressed that the school is helping their students want to attend college and helping provide the tools needed for each child to succeed. A few students would like to see a few more student clubs such as newspaper and student government, but they stated they are very happy that the school is helping them be prepared for college.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline in academic growth from 706 to 684. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams mixed with percentages above and below state averages. Examples include 32% of 9th graders passed the biology exam with the state at 60% and 81% of 10th graders passed the Life Sciences exam with the state average at 43%.

The California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. The results of the exams were not available at the time of this writing.

The school is doing a good job preparing students for college and beyond. It would still be a good idea to learn more about the California Exit Exam results to learn how many students are meeting requirements to graduate.
