Live Oak Charter School Review

Live Oak Charter School opened in 2001 as a charter school to offer families an alternative to traditional schools. The school serves students in kindergarten through 8th grades with an average enrollment of around 270 students per year. The school uses the Waldorf method of teaching that focuses on the whole child, which includes emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially.

Along with core subjects, Live Oak Charter School offers extra curricular activities including ceramics, painting, drama, dance, photography, chorus, orchestra, and band. Sports offered include basketball, bicycling, soccer, softball, physical education classes, yoga, and volleyball. Other programs available are science & technology and community service.

Most parents are excited about the curriculum and the attention their children receive from the teachers. The school provides one on one attention to students along with encouragement. Students really enjoy going to school and state that their teachers are very nice.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline in academic growth from 816 to 810. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was mixed with some above average and others below average. Examples include 32% of 3rd graders passed the math exam with the state average at 69% and 83% of 6th graders passed the English Language Arts exam with the average at 59%.

The school is providing a quality education, however, if you are not familiar with the Waldorf curriculum it would be a good idea to learn more by talking with teachers before enrolling your child.
