Literacy First Charter School – Junior Academy Review

Literacy First Charter School opened their Junior Academy in 2001 to serve students in 4th through 8th grades with an alternative to traditional schools. The school focuses on a back to basics and hands on learning curriculum. The school offers instruction in a variety of groupings and settings to ensure that each child has the opportunity to learn in a way that best fits the child.

Along with core subjects, the Junior Academy campus offers extra curricular activities including drawing, dance, and computer arts. Sports offered include physical education classes and soccer. Other programs available are science & technology, academic contests and community service.

There are parents that love the school and other that have reservations regarding the staff and teachers. Most parents are very pleased with the school and the devotion of the teachers, however a few parents stated that teachers yell at students and are often rude to parents. Students on the other hand stated they like most of the teachers but would like to see some sports offered like baseball and basketball.

The Academic Performance Index showed academic growth from 892 to 901. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was equal to state averages or above state averages in all grade levels and all subjects.

Overall, the school is doing a great job providing a quality education, however, with the comments of a small percentage of parents it would be a good idea to take a tour and talk with other parents before enrolling your child.
