Lighthouse Community Charter High School Review

Lighthouse Community Charter High School is an alternative to traditional school settings for students in grades 9th through 12th grades in Oakland. The school opened due to the fact that there was a high drop out rate in the area and work mainly with students that are at risk of finishing high school. The student body is diverse with 78% Hispanic or Latino, 17% African American, 3% Asian, 2% Filipino, and 1% unspecified.

At this time, the school does not offer any sports or other programs for students. The school does offer some extra curricular activities. The main focus is providing a well-rounded education that will ensure all students receive their high school diploma and will have the necessary skills to enter college or the workforce.

The majority of parents had nothing but good things to say about the school. Most reported their children are doing much better and want to attend school. Students expressed the extra curricular activities are very enjoyable and help to get you to do your homework.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decline in academic growth from 787 to 758. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades. The percentage of students passing the exams was at the state average or just above. Examples include the percentage of 10th graders passing the science exam was 55% while the state average was 53% and 9th graders in English Language Arts at 58% with the average at 57%. Some percentages were below average in 11th grade.

the California High School Exit Exam tests 10th graders mastering skills in English language arts and mathematics. In English Language Arts 92% passed with the state average at 83% and in math 98% passed with the state at 84%.

The school is doing an excellent job of keeping students in school and graduating. If you have any concerns, you should talk with other parents to learn if the learning environment is one, in which your child will excel.
