La Paloma Academy – Lakeside Review

La Paloma Academy opened their Lakeside campus in 2003 for students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The school offers small classrooms where students can receive individual attention when needed while allowing students to learn independence in a family style learning environment. Along with core subjects, the students have the opportunity to enjoy other activities including drama, computer arts, dance, drawing, basketball, cross-country, physical education classes, football, softball, swimming, soccer, track, volleyball, newspaper, yearbook, and student council.

Overall parents expressed how much they like their children attending La Paloma Academy. Most stated that teachers and staff are very caring and attentive to all students. All parent concerns are answered as quickly as possible whether in person or via email or phone. Students are learning and excelling while enjoying going to school. Only one negative remark was noted which was that in recent years a few teachers are not as experienced and often are not in control of their class.

To learn if the school is meeting state standards, looking at the percentage of students that pass or exceed the AIMS series of test is always the best way. Percentages of students that passed or exceeded the exam in 3rd grade was lower than average in reading and math, but higher in writing. The percentage of 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders that passed the exam in reading, science, writing, and math was lower than state averages.

Even with good comments from parents, it would be best to learn more about the school as the percentage of students that are passing the state exams are quite a bit below averages. In order to graduate from high school, students must pass these series of tests. If they are not passing the exams in the lower grades, it will make them have to really work hard in higher grade levels in order to graduate.
