HomeTech Charter School Review

HomeTech Charter School opened in 1996 for grades Kindergarten through 12th. At HomeTech Charter School, students are challenged with independent study as well as distance learning. The objective is for students to learn in a family style environment with small groups.

At this time, there are no extra curricular activities offered as the school is mainly for those learning at home.

Parent reviews of this school show how much they love the flexibility of the learning environments and how great the teachers are. They loved the principal. The area for improvement was getting parents even more involved and the test scores, which were below what the state average showed. Students of HomeTech are very impressed with their teachers and how involved they are, however, they would like to see a few extra curricular activities such as basketball.

The Academic Performance Index showed an increase in academic growth from 648 to 670. The statewide goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The test results for HomeTech Charter School were all below the state standard in all grades and each subject. For example, 17% of 11th graders passed the Earth Science exam with the average at 38%. For the 8th grade Science exam 21% passed. The state average was 66%.

The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) is used to test 10th grade high school students’ skills in English language arts and mathematics. Here the results were mixed, but not above the state percentage. In Math 84% passed which matched the average and in English 71% passed with the state at 83%.

The test scores are a concern for parents while the teachers at HomeTech Charter School have been cited as being very dedicated to their job. If you have any concerns, you should take a tour to learn more about the environment and the curriculum.
