High Tech High Media Arts Charter School Review

High Tech High Media Arts Charter School opened in 2005 for grades 9th through 12th. As the name implies this school is focused on the media arts. Projects for the curriculum involve journalism, graphic art, film, radio, animation, web page development, fine art and other media arts to expose students to all that the media arts program has to offer.

Along with the core subjects and the heavy influence of media arts students can also participate in a variety of other activities. These include photography, computer arts, ceramics/sculpture, drawing/painting, theatre/drama, Spanish, student council, community service, science and technology, yearbook and community service. The athletics offered are cross country, soccer, basketball, golf, softball, tack, baseball, tennis and volleyball.

The reviews range from teachers not prepared to teach to a principal that doesn’t know what he is doing. Even the students get frustrated with learning material that is not necessary. The school has a great reputation, but the curriculum does not back that up. Some parents were impressed as their children excelled while attending the school.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decrease in academic growth from 794 to 783. The state standard is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

Test results for High Tech High Media Arts Charter School are mixed. In some areas the students excelled and beat the state average while in others they fell below the average. For example 14% of 10th grade students passed the Chemistry exam with the state at 51%. 30% passed the Geometry exam and the state was 17%.

The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) tests 10th grade students. On the math exam they scored 94% with a state average of 84% and 95% passed the English exam with the state at 83%.

Media arts are the focus at High Tech High Media Arts Charter School and they challenge every student. To ensure the school offers the best learning environment for your child, you should take a tour.
