High Tech High Charter School opened in 2000 for grades 9th through 12th. With a project-based curriculum, this school approaches academic instruction differently. Technology and liberal arts fields are both a focus for students to develop the necessary skills for the work field as well as for college courses upon graduation.

Along with core subjects, High Tech High Charter School offers computer arts, video/film production, drawing/painting, Spanish, academic contests, student council and government, debate, science, technology, yearbook and radio/video/multimedia. Students can also participate in community service and construction/building trades. The athletics program includes basketball, golf, softball, soccer, baseball, fencing, tennis and yoga.

Parent reviews of High Tech High Charter School are mixed. Some love the help with college prep, the challenging projects, the idea of being a self-motivated, self disciplined student which aides in the growth of a high school student into a college student and productive member of the community. Other parents however, disliked the lackluster curriculum and the lack of parental involvement along with the knowledge of how their children were actually doing.

The Academic Performance Index showed a decrease in academic growth from 804 to 796. The state goal is 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.

The students at High Tech High Charter School showed results that were generally above the state requirements across all grades. Some exams did show results that were below.

For the California Exit Exam for 10 grade students 92% passed the math exam over the average of 84%.

Overall High Tech High Charter School is well liked for its new and unique approach to learning. It is not the right the school for every child so if you would like to know more schedule a tour and discuss a potential future for your child with the teachers.
