Hickman Middle School opened in 2000 to provide an alternative for families wanting an alternative to traditional schools for students in 6th through 8th grades. The school offers a variety of educational options that include home study, distance learning, and classroom studies. The school mixes online classes with on-site classes to help create an individualized learning experience.

Along with core subjects, Hickman Middle School offers extra curricular activities such as drama, photography, film production, orchestra, dance, painting, chorus, computer arts, and band. Sports available include baseball, cheerleading, basketball, football, physical education classes, softball, track, volleyball, and soccer. Other programs offered include community service, yearbook, science & technology, newspaper, student council, and academic contests.

Most parents are very pleased with the school and the amount of parent involvement found at the school. Teachers, staff, and administration go out of their way to ensure that students receive a quality education in a safe learning environment. Students stated they really like the school, the curriculum, and all the activities the school offers.

The Academic Performance Index showed the academic growth stayed the same from the previous year at 888. The goal statewide is a score of 800.

The California Standards Tests is used to learn if students are mastering core subjects. The various tests are given to 2nd through 11th grades in English, grades 2nd through 7th are given tests in math, and science tests are administered to students in grades 5th, 8th, and 10th, while history tests are given to students in 8th and 11th grades.
The percentage of students passing the exams at Hickman Middle School was above state averages across all grade levels and all subjects.
